Wire, fabric, acrylic paint

17”x16”x16”

Hovering between abstraction and representation, my work stems from a long investigation of my surroundings and ideas about place. This sculpture is fabricated from bed linens sourced from secondhand stores in Las Vegas, ripped and braided over galvanized wire. I made the underlying structure by hand ten years ago as an international (grad) student as part an installation titled, Dead & Alive. Like a tumbleweed moving across the country, this surviving piece has moved with me living in NV, MI, FL, and TX. Soft to the touch for a decade, in 2022 I recently transformed the soft braided form to solid using specialty acrylic polymer emulsion. Reflecting my recent interest in optical phenomena of perceptual compliments, I have painted the three-dimensional object with florescent yellow and custom iridescent violet. Both the physical and cultural transformation of the reclaimed linens as an art material fascinates me.
