About the Exhibit:

This exhibition exemplifies a response to visits I have made to the Black Canyon of the Gunnison over the past two years.

The Canyon and its steep gorge are breathtaking. I recall gasping as I peered over the edge of the rim, my eye following the steep cascading cliffs to the river below. After the initial jolt and awakening of the senses, it seemed that time stood still and my gaze became more measured slowly traveling across the forms and rhythmic details of the rock.

I translated this into a series of drawings.  The predominance of the color ‘red’ reflects the feel of the rocks’ heat from the intensity of the sun and heightens the quality of light.  The medium and surface were also strategically chosen for their like-minded qualities:   dry pastel on a rough, coarse paper.

These pieces show a departure from past approaches.  The drawings are small, self-contained and largely representational. In their making I engaged in a process that was meditative and quiet, working in close proximity to the surface and experiencing an intimacy with observed detail.  Yet matching the intimacy is an immensity of space which I encountered and was compelled to convey.

Ironically, ‘Permanent Red’ depicts nothing that is permanent.
